Tiffany Lamp Shades: A Complete Guide to Shapes, Sizes, and Materials

The shade is the soul of a Tiffany lamp. Everything that makes a Tiffany lamp distinctive, the warm colored light, the intricate patterns, the way a room changes character when the lamp is turned on, is because of the lamp shade. Understanding how Tiffany lamp shades are made, what shapes and sizes exist, and what materials are used helps you make better buying decisions and gives you a deeper appreciation for what you are looking at when you hold one up to the light.

This guide covers the complete picture of Tiffany lamp shade design. Browse our full range of Tiffany-style stained glass lamps to see these principles in action across our entire catalog.

How a Tiffany Lamp Shade Is Made

Every Tiffany-style shade from our manufacturers is made using the copper foil technique developed by Louis Comfort Tiffany's studio in the 1890s. The process is the same whether you are looking at an inexpensive entry level lamp or a high end Meyda Tiffany floor lamp, the method does not change, only the complexity and scale of the design.

Step 1 - Cutting the Glass

Each individual piece of glass is hand-cut to its exact shape using a glass cutter and breaking pliers. For a simple geometric shade, this might mean a few hundred pieces. For a complex floral design like the Trillium and Violet shade, it can mean several thousand. The quality of the cutting determines how cleanly the pieces fit together.

Step 2 - Wrapping in Copper Foil

Each cut piece is wrapped around its edges with a thin strip of adhesive copper foil tape. The foil is burnished to adhere firmly to both the top and bottom face of the glass edge. This is the step that gives the technique its name and that distinguishes it from traditional lead came construction.

Step 3 - Assembly and Soldering

The foil-wrapped pieces are assembled onto a form, a mold that establishes the final shape of the shade, in the order specified by the design. Once all pieces are in place, solder is flowed along all the copper seams using a soldering iron, bonding the assembly permanently. The solder lines become the characteristic dark outlines that define the design.

Step 4 - Patina and Finishing

The completed solder framework is treated with a patinating solution that oxidizes the solder and any exposed copper to a dark, consistent color. This finishing step gives the shade its characteristic appearance, the dark lines that make each piece of glass appear to float within its defined boundary.

Shade Shapes

Tiffany lamp shades come in several distinct shapes, each with its own visual character and light-distribution properties.

Dome / Hemisphere

The classic Tiffany shade shape, a rounded dome that covers the upper hemisphere of the light source, directing light downward and outward. The full dome shape maximizes the visible glass area when viewed from the side and creates the most dramatic colored light pool beneath the lamp. Most of our Tiffany table lamps use dome shades in various proportions from shallow to deep.

Cone

A straight-sided conical shade that is wider at the bottom than the top. The cone shape is particularly common in mission and geometric designs. The straight sides suit geometric patterns well and direct light more precisely downward. The Meyda Tiffany Wisteria Accent Lamp, Nuevo Cone Table Lamp, and many Chloe mission designs use conical shades.

Irregular / Scalloped

Many floral Tiffany shades have an irregular lower edge that follows the contours of the design, scalloped edges shaped by flower petals, leaf tips, or branch forms. This is one of the most distinctive features of premium Tiffany-style shades: the silhouette of the shade itself becomes part of the design. The Meyda Tiffany Wisteria, Cherry Blossom, and Lotus Leaf shades all feature organic lower edges.

Inverted Bowl / Uplight

An inverted bowl shade faces upward, directing light toward the ceiling for a soft, diffused glow. This format is used in our Tiffany inverted pendant lights and some torchiere floor lamps. The Meyda Tiffany Wisteria Inverted Pendant and Lotus Leaf Inverted Pendant are amazing examples.

Oblong / Billiard

The elongated rectangular shade format used in billiard lamps and island lights. The oblong shade spans the length of a pool table or kitchen island, providing even illumination across a long surface. Our Tiffany billiard lamp collection includes pieces in 32" and 40" widths, including the extraordinary Meyda Tiffany Navajo Mission Oblong Pendant.

Shade Materials

While the vast majority of Tiffany-style shades use traditional stained art glass, our catalog also includes several alternative material traditions worth knowing about.

Stained Art Glass (Standard)

90% of our lamps use genuine stained art glass, hand-rolled sheet glass in hundreds of colors, textures, and translucency levels. The key characteristic of quality art glass is natural variation within each piece: no two cuts of the same color are identical, and the variation creates the visual depth and richness that distinguishes a genuine Tiffany-style shade from a cheap imitation. When lit, the variation in glass thickness and density creates shifting patterns of light intensity that animate the shade.

Mica Glass

Mica is a natural mineral that can be split into thin, translucent sheets. The material favored by the American Arts and Crafts movement for lamp shades. Mica produces a warm, amber-toned glow entirely different from the jeweled brightness of stained glass. See ourĀ Tiffany lamps by material collection.

Mosaic Glass

Mosaic glass shades use small pieces of glass arranged in a tile-like surface pattern rather than the flowing designs of copper foil work. The Dale Tiffany Johana Mosaic Flush Mount and Bradshaw Mosaic Flush Mount are examples, their opalescent, multi-colored mosaic surfaces create a distinctive scattered-light effect different from traditional stained glass.

Agate and Natural Stone

The most unusual material tradition in our catalog: the Meyda Tiffany Agata series uses genuine opalescent quartz agate stones set into the lamp shade. The natural banding and color variation in each agate stone creates a one-of-a-kind shade. No two Agata lamps are precisely identical.

Understanding Tiffany Shade Sizes

Tiffany table lamp shades are typically described by their diameter at the widest point, which is usually the bottom rim. Common sizes in our catalog range from approximately 8 inches (small accent lamps) to 28 inches (large statement pieces) in diameter.

For Tiffany floor lamps, shade diameter can reach 30 inches or more. The Meyda Tiffany Lotus Leaf Floor Lamp features a shade that is two feet wide. For billiard lamps, the shade span (not diameter, since the shade is oblong) is 32 or 40 inches.

When shopping for replacement shades, always measure the shade fitter, the opening at the top of the shade where it meets the lamp harp or shade holder, as well as the outer diameter. Shade fitters are not standardized across manufacturers.

Caring for a Tiffany Lamp Shade

A well-made Tiffany-style stained glass shade will last for decades with minimal care. The glass itself is essentially indestructible under normal conditions. The solder and patina can be preserved with these simple practices:

  • Dusting - Use a soft, dry brush or compressed air to remove dust from the inside of the shade. Do not use liquid cleaners on the interior of the shade as they can streak the glass and damage the patina.
  • Exterior cleaning - A very slightly damp cloth can be used to clean the exterior glass surfaces. Dry immediately. Avoid any cleaner containing ammonia or alcohol, these can damage the patina on the solder lines.
  • Handling - Always lift a Tiffany shade from the base or bottom rim, never from the top or by gripping the glass panels. The copper foil at the top of the shade near the fitter bears the most stress.
  • Bulbs - Use the wattage specified for your lamp. Excessive heat from over-wattage bulbs can weaken the solder over time. LED bulbs are preferred for Tiffany shades, they produce less heat and the warm white LED spectrum (2700K) complements the colors of stained art glass beautifully.
